Portugal, country lying along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Once continental Europe’s greatest power, Portugal shares commonalities—geographic and cultural—with the countries of both northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It’s cold, rocky northern coast and mountainous interior are sparsely settled, scenic, and wild, while the country’s south, the Algarve, is warm and fertile. The rugged Estrela Mountains (Serra da Estrela, or “Star Mountain Range”), which lie between the Tagus and Mondego rivers, contain the highest point of mainland Portugal.

When you say Portugal soccer you say Ronaldo, the soccer star of Portugal. CR7 has received five FIFA Ballon d'Or awards and won numerous prizes with his club and national teams. Portugal's first participation in a major tournament final was at the 1966 World Cup, which saw a team featuring another Portuguese Ballon d'Or winner Eusébio finish in third place. Its biggest success is that Portugal beat France in the final to win UEFA EURO 2016, their first major international tournament success. They came agonizingly close to winning the competition in 2004 but lost to Greece in the final.

Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants.

I would strongly recommend Premier International Tours to anyone looking to explore other soccer cultures and connect with soccer people around the world. As my players and I parted ways back in the US, one of them summed it up: “Thanks for the trip of a lifetime!” Thanks, Premier, for another fantastic foreign tour. We’re already looking forward to the next one."
